Iconoclastic composer and performer Meredith Monk looks to the future through Dancing Voices, a 45-minute, intergenerational production created for the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, which premiered in Lincoln Center’s 2017 White Light Festival.

The “body sings and the voice dances” in this program, which captures the kinetic energy and pioneering philosophy of Meredith Monk’s six-decade exploration of the human voice as an instrument. Shing Way, this nine-minute excerpt, was performed March 4, 2020, at the Eastern Division American Choral Directors Association conference in Rochester New York, under the direction of YPC Associate Artistic Director Elizabeth Núñez, just days before the pandemic closed our doors.
