In a first-time event for Voices of Ascension, we are proud to announce that our March 14 concert Les Voix Françaises will be available both with in-person tickets in New York City, and simultaneously streamed live worldwide! For those Voices fans who can’t attend this show, this event will be available online for at least one week after the event.
Francis Poulenc’s Stabat Mater is one of the great masterpieces of French choral music. The work is alternately sumptuous and boldly dramatic; listen for moments of sparkling clarity and others of great depth. Dennis Keene’s transcription for organ and chorus will highlight the unique colors of Ascension’s magnificent French pipe organ built in 2010 by Pascal Quoirin, builder of the organ in Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral.
We will begin the concert with a set of songs celebrating the exceptional music of 20th-century French composer Lili Boulanger, sister of Nadia. Works will include the triumphant Hymne au Soleil, the exotic and highly dramatic Vieille prière bouddhique, and the touching, poetic Sous Bois.
