Voices of Connection: 06/26 Pride Weekend: Aaron Copland

We celebrate this Pride Weekend with music from the LGBTQ+ community. Voices of Ascension has always been totally inclusive in regard to gender and sexual orientation – in all aspects of our organization: musicians, staff, board, donors, audience. We are proud that we all are part of one family where that has never been an issue. However, we are deeply saddened that we have not been successful yet in terms of racial and ethnic inclusivity. But that is going to change, and you will be hearing more about that as we move forward. Today, our music features one of the most beloved songs by the great American gay composer, Aaron Copland. This beautiful performance was made by baritone William Parker, who performed with Voices many times in our early years. He was an exceptional singer and artist, and one of our many gay brothers who succumbed to the AIDS crisis. I was honored to participate in his memorial concert which took place at the Church of the Ascension.
