Voices of Connection: 11/15 Bach: “Sanctus” and “Osanna” from Mass in B Minor

You would think that, after yesterday’s thrilling conclusion, the next movement might be more relaxed. But, no! The next two movements are even more elevated, more brilliant. The “Sanctus” is without question the finest Sanctus ever composed. This is quite a bold statement; but justified in that no other composer ever expressed the utterly cosmic sense of praise that this piece expresses. It is as if all the angels in all the universes in all times were all shouting back and forth “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of Hosts.” An exultant Osanna follows, this virtuoso movement scored for double chorus and orchestra.
