Voices of Connection: 04/04 Heinrich Isaac: "Sanctus" from Missa de Apostolis

Heinrich Isaac (ca. 1450-1517), like his contemporary and fellow-Netherlander Josquin, spent much of his earl career in Italy. When he began working in Florence for the great Lorenzo de’ Medici, another of Lorenzo’s artists, Botticelli, had just completed his Birth of Venus. Leonardo da Vinci periodically came into town. Some period of history! Isaac’s great contributions to music include richer and more-modern choral sonorities than were previously known. His six-part “Sanctus,” vigorous and soaring, is based on the chant melodies preceding each section.
