Voices of Connection: 04/10 Lotti: Crucifixus

Through the never-ending use of dissonances – one after the other, Lotti creates a highly charged depiction of the Crucifixion, death and burial of Christ. It was composed in the transition period between the Renaissance and Baroque. It is extravagant in its gesture, but genuinely heart-felt at the same time. Although not in Lotti’s score, I asked our basso profundos to add a low C at the very end, I think, in keeping with the dramatic spirit of the piece.
