Voices of Connection: 10/11 Renaissance Dissonance!
Two days ago we heard Heu Nos Miseros. I thought you would enjoy hearing another piece of the same style. Through the never-ending use of dissonances – one after the other, Lotti creates a highly charged depiction of the Crucifixion, death, and burial of Christ. It was composed in the transition style between the Renaissance and Baroque. It is extravagant in its gesture, but genuinely heartfelt at the same time. Although not in Lotti’s score, I asked our basso profundos to add a low C at the very end, I think, in keeping with the dramatic spirit of the piece.
