All of us at Voices of Ascension were heart-broken to hear of Sunday’s shooting at St. John the Divine. That this happened in a moment when musicians and singers had come together to offer the healing power of music to the community is truly tragic and we stand in solidarity with the community of St. John and all who were affected.

I had planned to share some cheerful Christmas music as a teaser for tonight’s virtual Candlelight Holiday Concert, and while it no longer feels appropriate to do so, we need music just as much in difficult times as in easy ones, so I offer this “O Magnum Mysterium” of Victoria. Just as the piece opens in somber fashion and ends in a place of transformed joy, my wish is that we can all pass through all of the difficulties of this moment, and I hope that music can play its small part in helping us to find solace and joy.
