Voices of Connection: 04/13 Farrant: Lord, For Thy Tender Mercies’ Sake
Farrant was one the many English composers near the end of the Renaissance who were not interested in a complicated musical style with elaborate counterpoint. His gift was to set a text in a simple and evocative way so that the words could be understood and felt. His two Lenten anthems, Hide not thou thy face from us O Lord and Call to remembrance are classics in the repertory. So is this lovely, sweet anthem, where every single word can be understood, and the tender music fits the words perfectly. It is so short you may want to hear it twice!
