Voices of Connection: 12/23 Sweet Little Jesus Boy
For the month of December, Voices’ Artistic Administrator, Wesley Chinn will be curating a selection of Holiday music from recent Candlelight Christmas and Family Holiday Concerts. Read more about Wesley here.
With just two more days until Christmas, I turn this space over to our baritone soloist from the Candlelight Holiday Concert, Justin Austin. Each holiday concert since 2014 has featured a talented young soloist, and we were delighted that Justin was able to record this beautiful rendition of “Sweet Little Jesus Boy'' for us this year. This enabled us to continue the tradition of featuring one of our Voices of Promise soloists on this program, and also ensured that we had a piece of original content to go along with our recorded-at-home videos from our ensemble.
“Sweet Little Jesus Boy” was composed in 1934 by Robert MacGimsey, a white American who had made it his life’s work to preserve African American music in the American South. It was made famous by Mahalia Jackson and has since been interpreted brilliantly by many others, including this performance! — Wesley Chinn
